We’re celebrating 10 years of Global-PPS this year! In honour of this special anniversary, we have created a dynamic timeline that guides you through Global-PPS’s history and our biggest milestones throughout the years. Take a look!
2006 - 2009
European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Consumption (ESAC-PPS)
The first ESAC-PPS, coordinated by the University of Antwerp, included 20 hospitals from 20 EU countries. The final survey covered ca. 200 hospitals from 25 EU countries.
2010 - 2012
Antimicrobial Resistance and Prescribing in European Children (ARPEC-PPS)
New EU-funded project on Antimicrobial Resistance and prescribing in European Children (ARPEC-PPS) conducted in 2011 and repeated in 2012. It focused on antimicrobial use in hospitalised children and neonates.
2013
The birth of Global-PPS
World HAI Forum
During the 4th edition of the World HAI Forum on Healthcare-Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance, June 2013, Annecy, France, bioMerieux decided to sponsor a worldwide Point Prevalence Survey on Antimicrobial Consumption and Resistance in hospitals.
Development of the Global-PPS protocol
2014
Development of Global-PPS web-based application for data entry & validation
Global-PPS pilot in 33 hospitals worldwide (October-November 2014)
2015
First worldwide Global-PPS
Conducted in 335 hospitals across 53 countries (100.600 patients) demonstrating that worldwide surveillance can be accomplished with voluntary participation. Any hospital admitting inpatients was welcome to participate.
2016
First annual Global-PPS meeting & booklet
First annual Global-PPS meeting at the ECCMID congress, Amsterdam, The Netherlands and launch of first Global-PPS booklet covering 22 presentations.
2017
Expansion of the network
Second worldwide Global-PPS
2018
Publication on first G-PPS data collection
Core paper on the first Global-PPS collected amongst 335 hospitals across 53 countries worldwide, demonstrating that worldwide surveillance can be accomplished with voluntary participation.
Survey extension
Hospitals could now participate in the Global-PPS up to three times a year (Jan-Apr, May-Aug, and Sept-Dec), allowing for follow-up antimicrobial stewardship interventions through repeated PPS’s.
Second Global-PPS booklet covering 25 presentations, 22 were presented at ECCMID in Madrid, Spain
Start collaboration with MSF
2019
Development & launch of additional Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) module with focus on use of invasive devices
CwPAMS
Start collaboration with Commonwealth Pharmacists Association on the Commonwealth Partnerships for Antimicrobial Stewardship (CwPAMS) with Global-PPS conducted in Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
AMS survey
Increased focus on Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) in the Global-PPS network by conducting a survey on AMS in participating hospitals (role of Global-PPS, barriers & facilitators).
AWaRe launch
Launch of WHO AWaRe (Access, watch, reserve) classification list for evaluation and monitoring of antibiotic use and first Global-PPS article using the AWaRe classification amongst children in the Global-PPS GARPEC network.
2020
Impact of the pandemic
The Covid-19 pandemic caused a drop in degree of participation.
SOP
A first edition of the Selection of Publications was created.
2021
Recovery of participation rate
CwPAMS programme extension
Second round of CwPAMS project extended to eight African countries including Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, Zambia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Malawi and Kenya.
AWaRe
Publication on AWaRe (Access, Watch, Reserve) antibiotic use among adults in the Global-PPS network.

- Launch of a project on Antibiotic Data to Inform Local Action (ADILA) – Global-PPS as an important partner for data sharing.
- Launch of Pfizer outpatient project on ambulatory care in Nigeria, Togo and Burkina Faso.
2022
Outpatient protocol
Outpatient protocol development and pilot in hospitals and primary healthcare institutions in Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Togo.
SPARC-PPS
The Global-PPS was conducted as part of the Surveillance and Prescribing Support for Antimicrobial Stewardship Resource Capacity Building project (SPARC-PPS) in Malawi, Nepal, Nigeria, Timor-Leste, and Zimbabwe.
Qualitative research
Start of a qualitative research study on AMS implementation in the Global-PPS network, with a focus on low- and middle-income countries.
drive-AMS
Kick-off of the drive-AMS project in November, a data driven AMS approach. It’s a collaboration with Radboudumc from Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
2023
Outpatient module
Worldwide launch of web-based data collection for the Global-PPS Outpatient module, funded by bioMérieux. Any healthcare facility, hospital, clinic or primary healthcare center is invated to participate.
Interactive online reporting
Introduction of an innovative, interactive detailed online reporting dashboard through the Global-PPS tool.
Special edition of Selection of Publications on the impact & value of the Global-PPS
2024
10 years of Global-PPS
Over 1150 participating hospitals across 97 countries, surveying over 575.000 patients.
